Recording Basics: Video Capture in Camtasia

2 min read

In this guide, we’ll cover the basics of capturing video with Camtasia, including adding a webcam or talking head video to your screen share.

Choosing Your Webcam: #

To record your video, you need to select a webcam. Click the dropdown arrow and choose your desired camera from the list. This will turn on the webcam and allow you to capture both the screen and yourself speaking into the camera.

Once your webcam is selected, you will see a preview of the image being captured. Hover over the image to see what will be recorded.

Recording Your Talking Head Video: #

For a talking head video, simply click the Record button. In this example, we’re not recording a screen share or PowerPoint presentation but focusing on recording a video of yourself speaking directly into the camera.

The countdown will begin, and Camtasia will start recording your webcam feed.

Stopping the Video: #

To stop recording, press F10 or manually click the Stop button in the Camtasia toolbar. This will stop the video and return to the editing screen.

Editing the Video: #

After stopping the recording, you’ll see two video tracks: one for the talking head video and one for the screen share (if applicable).

You can delete the screen share video if you only want the talking head video. To do this, highlight the video and click Delete.

Now, you can position your talking head video in the center of the canvas and resize it as needed using the Properties panel.

Adding Enhancements: #

You can enhance your video by adding annotations, transitions, and animations. For example, you can add text to the top corner by dragging an annotation onto the timeline and adjusting its duration.

You can also use animations like Tilt Right or Tilt Left to add motion to your video.

Exporting the Video: #

Once your video is ready, you can produce it as an MP4 file for sharing on platforms like YouTube, Vimeo, or Google Drive.

For videos with interactivity, you can use the Smart Player option for platforms like Screencast.com or custom production settings.

By following these steps, you can create a professional-looking talking head video, adjust its size and position, and enhance it with annotations and animations before exporting it.
